Cindy Sherman, icon of art history since thee 1980s, already demonstrated with her first important series Untitled Film Stills (1977-1980) the break between authentic self-imaging and posing in role play.
In times when gender and trans-gender are increasingly being debated in the public square, her complex handling of issues concerning identity and social clichés is making even more impact. With the title The Cindy Sherman Effect the Bank Austria Kunstforum Wien is thus tracing tor the first time the influence that Sherman's works have had and are still having on the works of younger artists.
